ON THE MATTER OF NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNITS: REPRODUCTIVE TECHNOLOGY, PREMATURITY, AND RACE
DANA-AIN DAVIS, PHD
Location: 1501 UH
Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) have been the dominant technology deployed to address the needs of premature or congenitally-
disabled infants. While NICU technology has, of course, been instrumental as a saving apparatus there are other ways in which they matter. In this talk, I take up the “matter” of NICUs to modestly explore some of the dynamic engagements that materialize there. Thinking through Haraway's methodological approach of working on connections of matter, I examine the NICU as an object to explore some of the loose ends of its articulation based on Black women’s interpretations of having their children admitted there.
