- Katie Lowry ('09) majored in English and minored in Gender and Women's Sutdies at UIC. After graduation, she completed an internship at Women Employed in the Summer Leadership Program. Shortly therafter, she moved to New York and worked at New York University. There, she planned events with the Alumni Relations team and then supported the Director of Development for the College of Arts and Sciences. Currently, she is the Major Gifts Coordinator for ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Kate has written for the Huffington Post Chicago and volunteers as an escort with Planned Parenthood of New York City. Her commitment to fundraising extends beyond her work-life; she voluntarily raised funds and participated in AIDS Walk New York and will run the Rock and Roll Chicago Half-Marathon this summer with Team ASPCA. She lives in Brooklyn with roommate and fellow GWS graduate Justin Sherwood ('09).
- Veronica I. Arreola majored in biological sciences and thanks to a National Science Foundation internship, found herself a home at Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History studying fish locomotion. During her tenure, Veronica published one paper and gave presentations at professional meetings. Veronica has a bachelors and masters degree from UIC, both with concentrations in women’s studies. She currently directs an academic support program for women majoring in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Veronica is a long time member of the Chicago feminist community having worked with Chicago NOW, Planned Parenthood, NARAL, and currently with the Chicago Abortion Fund, NW Suburban NOW, Women In Media & News, and Women Employed. She also served one year on the National NOW board. A veteran blogger, she helped launch the Planned Parenthood Action Illinois blog in October 2007 while the staff attended to anti attacks to the opening of a new health center in suburban Chicago. Today she is a featured blogger at Work it, Mom!, Kenneth Cole’s AWEARNESS blog, WIMNs Voices, and Chicago Parent. Her writing has been featured in Bitch magazine and RH Reality Check. She is a frequent speaker on all things feminist, especially education equity, reproductive justice, and feminist parenting. Veronica has made numerous media appearances ranging from local radio media (WSCR and WLUW) to local television (FOX News in the Morning) as well as the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times. Her honors include being named to the 2007 Chicago Foundation for Women Founders’ Award Class and a member of the Women’s Media Center’s project Progressive Women’s Voices. A die-hard Cubs fan, Veronica lives on the north side of Chicago with her husband, daughter, and their dachshund. Read Veronica's blog posts here.
