Dr. Akemi Nishida Recognized for Transformative Impact! UIC Community Engagement Award 2025
Introduction
The GWS Program congratulates Dr. Akemi Nishida, Associate Professor of Gender Women's Studies and Disability Studies, for being the recipient of the UIC Community Engagement Award 2025! We celebrate her feminist and justice-driven work!
Dr. Nishida was especially honored for her collaborative work with (1) the national Disability Project at the Transgender Law Center (which led to enabling this center to conduct the first data-driven research study with policy-based outcomes for disabled trans people of color at the national level); and (2) Access Living in Chicago (which contributed significantly to the passing of new legislation, the Community Emergency Services and Support Act/CESSA in Illinois).
