Drs. Anna Guevarra and Gayatri Reddy Publish Op-Ed in Truthout

Dr. Anna Guevarra, Founding Director and Professor in Global Asian Studies at UIC, and Dr. Gayatri Reddy, Associate Professor in Gender & Women's Studies, Global Asian Studies, and Anthropology at UIC, recently published "Chicago Hospital’s Closure Is a Canary in the Coal Mine for Corporatized Health Care" in Truthout. In their op-ed, Drs. Guevarra and Reddy stress how the closure of a community safety net signals the corporatization of health care via the role of private equity firms. Discussing the recent closing of the Weiss Memorial Hospital, they underscore that "the story of Weiss Memorial Hospital is a classic illustration of the corporatization of health care and the disadvantages of private equity acquisition of hospitals — always to the detriment of the public, especially vulnerable poor and communities of color."
