GWS Departmental Guidelines & Applications for Graduate Student Appointments
Teaching Assistant and Graduate Assistant Appointment Policies
GWS typically has several funding opportunities for graduate students, including Teaching Assistantships, Graduate Assistantships, and the occasional Research Assistantship. These are 50% appointments that include tuition remission and fee waiver with a salary determined by the current GEO contract. GWS graduate concentrators from any college are eligible for these positions, but students from the Liberal Arts and Sciences are preferred.
We offer six TA assignments each academic year; 3 appointments in GWS 101 (Gender in Everyday Life) and 3 appointments in GWS 102 (Global Perspectives on Women and Gender). The terms are for one year with an option to renew for a second year (assuming all goes well). TAs will be responsible for 50-60 students, and are expected to teach two discussion sections, attend all lecture sessions, and work with the instructor of record to develop assignments and discussion for undergraduate students. TAs also work together to ensure that undergraduates are succeeding in these critical gateway courses for GWS.
GWS usually recruits one graduate assistant per academic year. The GA supports the Associate Director and Director through website and social media management, event scheduling and promotion, and other administrative tasks. Like TAships, it is also renewable for a second year.
On rare occasions, GWS may have available research assistantships at the 50% or 25% level. These assignments are made at the discretion of faculty whose research funds support the positions.
