Civic Engagement, Community Service, and Community Organizing (CECSCO) Awards
The Gender and Women’s Studies (GWS) Program at UIC represents a unique space within the University. We are proud to be a part of a public university in a vibrant and diverse international city. We are also a part of an interdisciplinary movement within the Academy that has forged new knowledge and new ways of knowing, boldly uprooted old assumptions, and humbly waded into the intellectually unknown. That is the exciting part of what we do. Inextricably linked to this enterprise are our ties to a larger public, to brilliant and passionate thinkers and doers in areas of work beyond the university. So, it is in this spirit that in 2009 we inaugurated the first annual Civic Engagement, Community Service and Community Organizing (CECSCO) Award for UIC alumnae who have made a difference in the lives of women, advanced racial, gender or social justice causes, or advocated for rights and respect for LGBTQIA people.
